Sport & Health Education

At Camberwell High School, sport is an integral part of school life, supporting students to build confidence, resilience, teamwork and a lifelong connection to physical activity.

Our philosophy of physical education is centred on growth, participation and personal achievement. We value both team success and individual progress, recognising that each student’s journey is unique.

Through experiencing a range of physical activities, students develop confidence in their physical competencies and build a strong sense of self-efficacy. We encourage students to consider success as being not only defined solely by performance outcomes, but by effort and the willingness to challenge oneself.

Sport Education

Students in Years 7–9 participate in Sport Education classes each term, where they develop the fundamental skills, strategies and tactics required for a variety of sports. These classes are designed to:

· Build skill proficiency and game understanding

· Foster teamwork and sportsmanship

· Prepare students for interschool competition

Students are able to nominate for competitive sport teams through these classes. Students will have the opportunity to represent the school in their chosen sports, depending on team requirements and opportunities available. The sport education programme is designed for students to be part of a team and train in preparation for the division round-robin competition.

Sport education is held once a week during period 5 for students in years 7 – 9.

Camberwell High School proudly competes in the Boroondara Division in School Sports Victoria, alongside:

· Balwyn High School

· Kew High School

· Doncaster Secondary College

· Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College

Students have the opportunity to represent the school in round-robin interschool sport competitions across four age groups: Year 7, Year 8, Intermediate (Years 9–10) and Senior (Years 11–12). Each team competes once per term in a round-robin format against other schools within the Boroondara division.

Successful teams progress to the Eastern Metropolitan Region, which can lead to competing at the state championships.

Extending Opportunities Beyond School Sport

In addition to School Sport Victoria competitions, Camberwell High School actively supports students to compete in a range of external events, including all-schools cross country and athletics. These opportunities allow students to challenge themselves, pursue excellence, and achieve success beyond the school setting.

The school continues to expand its sporting program, engaging in a growing number of competitions and initiatives to ensure students have ample opportunities to explore, develop and excel in their sporting pursuits.

Curriculum-Aligned Opportunities

As part of our commitment to a contemporary and inclusive program, Year 7 Swimming has been introduced as a Term 4 Sport Education elective. This initiative aligns with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, supporting the development of water safety skills and confidence in aquatic environments.

Electives

Students who have a passion for Physical Education and Health Education have the opportunity to study electives like Exercise Science, Sport and Recreation, Health and Human Development, Physical Education in the middle years to further enhance their skills and knowledge. Students then have the opportunity to study these subjects in-depth at a VCE level at Camberwell High School and these classes are always very popular.

There are VET options also available to compliment these VCE subjects in the senior years. These students are encouraged to consider university pathways in this space through open days and course counselling.
