Grade 4 Masterclasses

Promoting excellence in government education, we offer Grade 4 students with curiosity and inquiring minds a visit for subject masterclasses, and the chance to try a day at ‘big school’.

In Term 3, we are holding masterclasses for Biology, Music and Digital Technology on the following dates:

Biology – Thursday 31 July, 9.30am-12.30pm

Music – Wednesday 20 August, 9.30am-12.30pm

Game Design – Friday 12 September,  9.30am-12.30pm

Biology

Explore the world of genetic engineering in this masterclass, discussing its current and future uses and ethical implications. Don a lab coat for hands-on activities, extracting real DNA from fruit and performing ‘gel electrophoresis’ with guidance from VCE Biology student mentors. Get inspired to engage with important societal issues, just like a real scientist!

Music

Join one of Victoria’s top-performing government school music programs, even if you’ve never played an instrument before. We’ll give you a go! Hear our ensembles perform, try out real instruments, and be part of the band. It’s the perfect way to discover the joy of making music!

Game Design

Our Game Design masterclass teaches students to design and modify algorithms by creating video games. Start with key principles of programming using a visual language, then brainstorm and develop your own game in small groups. To finish, we’ll play each other’s games. This fun and creative session introduces the fundamentals of computer science.

Our 2024 masterclass series was a huge success. Here is what past parents and participants have said:

“My son and his two friends LOVED the day. What a great opportunity for them, they were buzzing on the car ride back to school and had so much to say! Thank you so much. We look forward to the upcoming Game Design Masterclass.”

“My daughter was delighted to attend the masterclass. It was such a valuable experience to be able to build early connections with secondary school and ease some of the anxiety that comes with the move from primary school. The session itself seemed to be pitched at the right level and (she) came home with lots to share.”

“My son had a really fantastic day and could not stop talking about all the fantastic things he got to participate in and learn. Thank you and all the people who were involved in this, it was a fantastic experience for him.”
